Nisus Writer Pro Tutorials, Express — James Tummins has created a series of video tutorials for Nisus Writer Pro. These tutorials walk you through subjects such as styles, find and replace, table of contents, track changes, comments, and more. If you are new to Nisus Writer Pro or need a refresher, these videos are a great resource.
Meanwhile Nisus Writer Express is now only US$20? Like Pro, Express is a multilingual powerhouse, with support for just about every language and even right to left scripts. It’s compatible with popular file formats (.doc, .docx) and its native file format (.rtf) is compatible with just about every word processor out there.

Filters for Photos now in the Mac App store (still free) — Dozens of creative filters: vintage, analogue, oil paint, comics and many others. Use it as a standalone app or within Photos as an extension. Apply filters in real time, mix & match filters, adjust the look and even draw with filters. This is a free package – it hasn’t arrived in the NZ Mac App Store yet, but if you prefer to get things through Apple’s mediated Store, it will be there soon.

Cooks says to calm down — Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared yesterday on Jim Cramer’s Mad Money show and said all the “Apple is doomed” talk after a disappointing second fiscal quarter is way overblown. He also pointed out that great new products are coming [all eyes on June’s WWDC, then].

Fixing out-of-storage problems for iCloud backups — Macworld talks you through it.

MacScan deals to Trojan Horses, trackers and other malware — MacScan 3 has been designed to quickly identify and eradicate malware, spyware, Trojan horses, and tracking cookies from your system. Star Wars, Adobe Post, SkySafari, iTunes backup, not charging

Apple Music adds Star Wars Radio Station ahead of The Force — Apple Music added a Star Wars station to its online radio lineup on Wednesday that’s loaded with music from the movies interspersed with sound effects like blasters and Darth Vader’s respirator between tracks. It’s great music, and so far has been spoiler-free.

Adobe Post creates social media graphics in seconds — Do you ever think about design when you’re sending a tweet or posting on Facebook? You might start doing just that if Adobe Post (free with in-app purchases) catches on. The new app makes it a snap to create eye-catching graphics on the iPhone by remixing professional designs with your photos and text.

Simulation Curriculum’s SkySafari 5 for iOS has impressive new features — SkySafari is an excellent sky simulation and charting app for iOS. With it, you can view the sky at any date and time, identify objects in the sky, read about celestial objects, learn the constellations and even control an amateur telescope. On December 15, SkySafari 5 Pro was released, with Basic and Plus versions to follow soon. The suite of apps has an impressive list of new features.

How to make an iTunes backup of your iOS device — If you have an iCloud account, your iPhone and iPads back-up their contents there. However, to be doubly safe, you should make an iTunes backup of your device on your Mac. Here’s how.

Pull your iPhone from your pocket, now it won’t charge, here’s why — Have you ever plugged your iPhone into the charger and found, to your dismay, no reassuring “doink” and lighting bolt indicator in the top right menu bar? A trip to the Apple store may not be necessary if a rather amusing thing has happened. John Martellero might have a quick fix (in a word: lint).

Away — Sorry, there will be no updates for a few days as I’m blatting off for a quick pre-Christmas break. I will create a MagBytes between Christmas and New Year. I hope you have a good holiday season. Stay safe!

‘Lack Friday’ – RED but no discounts, Desk writer, Star Wars trailer

Looks like we don't get gift cards, only donations to the AIDS charity.
Looks like we don’t get gift cards, only donations to the AIDS charity.

Black Friday is on — Apple’s Black Friday sale is now live with the company offering a Product(RED) iTunes gift card for each eligible purchase. Gift card amounts range from NZ$35 to $120 depending on items being purchased – but it looks like NZ isn’t getting these, and England isn’t getting it either. We did last year, we’re just getting to donate (via Apple) to Project RED on world AIDS day (that’s today). The RED promotion is available in Apple’s online stores. However, there are lots of other deals we can use on software etc.

Desk is a ‘painless’ writing and blogging tool for Mac — John Saddington’s new app is simply named Desk (it’s NZ$38.99). When you’re typing, user interface items simply disappear from Desk so you’re actually typing on a blank page. Move your pointer with mouse or trackpad, and you begin to see some of the elements. At the bottom of the page you’ll see exactly when the current document was last saved, a character count, a word count, and reading time. That last statistic gives you an idea of how long it will take an average reader to fully digest your post. It also lets you publish directly to WordPress, Tumblr, Bloodspot and more.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer on iTunes — Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn’t due in theaters for about a year, but you can watch it in high quality on Apple’s Trailer site. The minute-and-a-half-long trailer doesn’t show any of the main characters but it has plenty of stormtroopers, droids, X-winds, and the Millenium Falcon. Also, a triple-blade Sith lightsaber.
